Jacopo Di Cera
«From above, the gaze is democratic.»
— Jacopo Di Cera
Biography
Jacopo Di Cera is an Italian photographer and visual artist whose practice brings together image, material and digital experimentation. Born in Milan in 1981, he turned to photography after a career in communications, developing a visual language attentive to the relationships between people, landscape and memory.
At the heart of his work is a desire to reveal what familiar ways of looking tend to overlook. In Sospesi, his overhead perspective transforms beaches, squares and places of leisure into compositions in which human figures create rhythms and geometries. Distance becomes a means of observing collective behaviour, revealing an unexpected dimension within everyday life.
With Fino alla Fine del Mare, begun in 2016 and dedicated to the boats of migrants on Lampedusa, he developed Photomaterism: an approach in which the photographic support contributes to the meaning of the image, bringing physical traces of the stories depicted into the work itself. Since 2020, this attention to material has been accompanied by an exploration of the expressive possibilities of digital art.
Among the winners of the National Geographic competition in 2010, he has presented his work at the Museo di Roma in Trastevere and PAN in Naples, as well as at events including Paris Photo and MIA Photo Fair. In 2025, he created Retreat, an installation in Dubai addressing climate change, and presented White Entropy at Milan Malpensa Airport.
Working across photography, installation and moving images, Di Cera invites viewers to reconsider their relationship with the places they inhabit and the changes unfolding within them.
